My experience is in a restaurant in Kodiak, Alaska called The Old Powerhouse. It got its name because it was built in the building that originally held the electric company’s generator plant.
This restaurant was started by a Japanese chef who came to Kodiak and liked it so much that he stayed and opened a restaurant. I lived in Kodiak for a year and have returned several times for business. One unique feature is that often bald eagles are on the patio outside the restaurant.
While very impressive, this was not the thing that left an impression on me. What has always impressed me is the way I am treated each and every time I have been there. The chef’s station is directly in front of the door. When anyone comes in, he looks up, smiles and welcomes each person or group warmly. All of his staff, many of whom are his family, treat people the same way.
When the meal is over and you are leaving, the chef calls out to you to thank you for coming and always at least one of the staff and sometimes more than one will manage to get to you before you make it to the door to personally thank you for coming and to wish you a good evening. It doesn’t matter how busy they are, they always do this.
I have been treated well in many restaurants but I have never felt as valued as I feel when I am there.
Such a simple thing. Many restaurants will give you a smile and a thank you but the warmth is missing. These people make you feel like you just might be the most important person there and they have an art of making each person feel this way without making it ever seem to be fake or forced.

All of our rolls were awesome and the miso soup was a perfect way to warm us up! There was a juvenile Bald Eagle that hung out on the patio, about four feet away from the window, so we took lots of pictures!
